“Get a clue.”
In third grade, I finally raised my hand to ask a question. My teacher, already frustrated with the class that day, screamed, “Get a clue and figure it out!” The whole classroom went silent. From that day on, I never asked another question in school.
Misunderstood
My silence was mistaken for a learning disability during an evaluation given only in English. My parents refused to accept the label and fought to have me reevaluated. The new evaluation showed the polar opposite: I was gifted, and I was placed in GATE.
The kitchen table
My new school confirmed I was gifted but had no math placement for me for nearly five years. So my father taught me himself at the kitchen table, with workbooks, secondhand textbooks and library books.
Seeing the gap
Moving between low-income schools, a farm-town school and an affluent high school showed me how much a student’s path depends on whether their family knows how the system works.
Becoming the teacher I needed
In college, I was pre-med and on my way to medical school. As a first-generation Asian American, medicine was the golden ticket and a thank-you for my family’s sacrifices. But my real joy came from tutoring children. With my medical school applications half-finished, I switched to education and chose to become the kind of teacher I had needed.

Years later, I reclaimed the words that once silenced me. Today, the name is a promise: every student and family deserves the clue, and no one should have to figure it out alone.

“Get a clue.”
For 25 years, I have taught, tutored and advised students from kindergarten readiness to college applications, at home in California and abroad in China, Mexico and Switzerland. I have sat with hundreds of families who felt lost in the system, and I have watched quiet students find their voice once someone finally answered their questions.
Everything I create comes from that work. The Who Can I Be? books teach children kindness, courage and character through stories inspired by my own family. The Academic Planner Guides walk families through every stage, from the moment a toddler starts learning through middle school, high school, college applications and career choices. Math Canon and Vocabulary give students the same kind of tools my father once gave me at our kitchen table. Through tutoring, seminars and the Get A Kluu Foundation, I get to meet students where they are, most recently at a seminar in Bali on confidence and career discovery.
The little girl who stopped asking questions grew up to make sure no student ever feels that way.
